Do you believe that cats can fly? That we'll be fighting man-hawk creatures in our apocalyptic future? That a vocal virtuoso can harbor snakes in his cranium? That somewhere there's a robust market for unicorns? That a tribal relic can literally bear fruit? In his first exhibition since retirement, former long-time National Geographic illustrator Christopher A. Klein brings the same meticulous ethic found in those pages' didactic pictures to this new collection of boundary-busting, unavoidably surreal oils and sketches. Resisting the urge to be nonsensical or overly precious, Klein respects basic animal impulses and botanic principles while reimagining genetics, mechanics, religion and mythology. His acute grasp of evolving scientific and cultural traditions make his odd cross pollinations—airplanes and bats, infants and plants, a Christian icon and a hot-air balloon (pictured)—utterly convincing.
